Mariehamn is the capital and largest city of the Åland Islands, Finland, named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna, the wife of Tsar Alexander II of the Russian Empire. The city was founded in 1861 and is currently the only city in the Åland Islands, boasting a rich maritime heritage.
Although not very large, Mariehamn is a well-known tourist destination, with approximately 1.5 million visitors each year. The city is also known as the “City of Linden Trees” because of the large number of linden trees planted along its main streets, creating a beautiful scenery. With its wooden buildings and green parks, the city is an ideal holiday destination and serves as a practical starting point for exploring the Åland Islands by car or bicycle. Visitors can relax in the lush Åland Park or swim at the famous Gröna Udden beach, enjoying the summer sun; they can also choose a café to taste the local specialty pancakes of the Åland Islands.
Mariehamn’s nightlife is vibrant and offers a variety of options, including clubs and bars. The newly opened PAF Casino, located in the central Arkipelag Hotel, provides a range of entertainment activities.
