Mausoleum of Mausolus – Mausoleum of Mausolus in Turkey

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is located in Halicarnassus, in the southwest of Turkey. The base of the building is rectangular, with an area of 40 meters (120 feet) by 30 meters (100 feet), and a height of 45 meters (140 feet). The podium wall is 20 meters high, the columns are 12 meters high, the pyramid is 7 meters high, and the chariot statue at the top is 6 meters high. The building is surrounded by a podium wall and decorated with stone statues. The top statue depicts four horses pulling an ancient chariot. In addition to its architecture, the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus is famous for its sculptures. The sculptures were created by four famous sculptors, Bryaxis, Leochares, Scopas, and Timotheus, each responsible for one side of the mausoleum. In the early 15th century, Halicarnassus was invaded and some stones from the Mausoleum were used for the construction of a large castle. Many sculptures have survived and are now housed in museums in London, UK. Since the 19th century, archaeological excavations have been carried out at the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, providing valuable information about its shape and appearance.
