Diyarbakır is located on the right bank of the Tigris River, it is the largest city in southeastern Turkey, serving as the capital of Diyarbakır Province. It is often referred to as the unofficial capital of Turkish Kurdistan. Historically, the city served as a key military stronghold and currently functions as an important military center in southeastern Turkey.
The old city of Diyarbakır is surrounded by a 5.5-kilometer intact Roman city wall, which is one of the most famous attractions and ranks second only to the Great Wall of China in terms of wall length. Visitors can enter the ancient city through its four main gates and marvel at the 82 watchtowers along the walls, offering a magnificent and grand spectacle. Diyarbakır boasts a series of mosques and churches, with the most prominent being the Great Mosque of Diyarbakır. In addition to the mosques and churches, the city is also home to an 11th-century bridge and the most important archaeological museum.
