Surabaya is located in the northeast corner of Java Island, facing the Madura Strait and the Surabaya Strait, across from Madura Island. It is the capital of East Java Province and the second-largest city in Indonesia.
Surabaya is a beautiful city with continuously erupting volcanoes, towering buildings, a thriving arts and cultural scene, ancient museums, grand festival events, and exquisite cuisine. The historic Cheng Hoo Mosque stands out among the Chinese architecture, with its pagoda-style design looking particularly unique. The century-old Cigarette Factory Museum is also worth a visit. Established by a person of Fujian descent, it has changed hands over several generations and is now operated by Americans. Visitors can witness the hand-rolled cigarette craftsmanship that has largely disappeared elsewhere. Additionally, the most unique natural spectacle in the area is the volcanic eruptions. Walking along the winding paths carved into the cliffs gives a sense of increasing danger.
Surabaya is home to nearly 3,500 animals, including various endangered species, at the Surabaya Zoo, as well as museums showcasing exquisite carvings and crafts, and shopping centers filled with a wide variety of goods, making them popular destinations for tourists.
