Lake Chad Basin – Chad Lake Basin Travel Guide

On July 1, 2012, the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee discussed and approved the inclusion of the “Lakes of Ounianga” in the World Heritage List. The Lakes of Ounianga are located in the Ennedi Region of the Republic of Chad, and they are currently the only natural World Heritage site in Chad.

Covering an area of 62,808 hectares, the Lakes of Ounianga consist of 18 interconnected lakes in the extremely arid Ennedi region of the Sahara Desert. Their vibrant colors and shapes create a magnificent natural landscape. The lakes, which include salty, hypersaline, and freshwater, are fed by underground water sources and are divided into two branches separated by 40 kilometers. The Ounianga Kebir branch has four lakes, with Yoan Lake being the largest at 358 hectares and 27 meters deep. It contains highly saline water that can only support algae and microorganisms. The second branch, Ounianga Serir, comprises 14 lakes separated by sand dunes. Floating reeds cover almost half of the lake surface, reducing water evaporation. Teli Lake is the largest of the 14 lakes at 436 hectares, but it is only 10 meters deep. The high-quality freshwater in some lakes provides habitats for aquatic organisms, especially fish.
