A natural lake formed by volcanic eruptions, Grand Bassin is a place of worship for Indian devotees in Mauritius. Located in the south of Mauritius near Mare aux Vacoas, Grand Bassin is considered a sacred lake by the locals. Situated between two green hills, it is believed that a missionary brought holy water from Europe and poured it into the lake, hence the name “Grand Bassin.” This natural lake, created by volcanic eruptions, is surrounded by two famous Hindu temples, making it the largest temple outside of India. Therefore, it is a place of worship for Indian devotees in Mauritius, especially during the grand celebrations of the “Maha Shivaratri” festival each year. The mountains and vegetation around Grand Bassin are reflected in the emerald green lake, creating a tranquil and picturesque scene.
