The Sof Omar Cave is located in the southeastern part of Ethiopia, with a total length of 15.1 kilometers, making it the longest cave in Ethiopia. The Weyib River flows through the cave. Discovered in 1897, the cave is claimed to be the longest cave system in Africa and the second longest globally. Both the Islamic and local religions consider the cave a sacred place.

The Sof Omar Cave is one of Ethiopia’s natural wonders, not far from the Bale Mountains, named after the refuge Shiik Sof Omar sought here centuries ago. The cave is cool and dry, with faint light filtering in through cracks near the entrance, illuminating the intricately crafted columns and pilasters, which tower high like the vaults of a Gothic cathedral.
