Mgahinga Gorilla National Park was established in 1991 and is located in the Virunga Mountains region in southwestern Uganda. It borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, covering an area of 33.7 square kilometers, and is one of the main locations in Uganda to observe mountain gorillas.

Mountain gorillas, one of the two subspecies of eastern gorillas, currently number less than 700 in the world and are one of the most critically endangered species. They are large in size, have long fur, and are gentle in nature, with most of them living in the border area of Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Rwanda. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is one of their most important habitats, making it one of the most famous attractions in Uganda where domestic and international tourists visit every year. However, sometimes these gorillas may cross the border and “migrate” to Rwanda, so visitors need to choose the right time to catch a glimpse of them.

In addition, within Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, there are three volcanoes: Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. The fertile soils on the slopes of the volcanoes and surrounding areas are densely covered with bamboo and broadleaf forests, providing a comfortable living environment not only for other animals but also bringing a lot of freshness to the entire park.
